Christian County YMCA Saves Big on Lighting

The Christian County YMCA in Taylorville serves as a vital hub for the local community, providing a wide range of programs and services to more than 3,200 members. As part of a larger capital campaign, the organization recently underwent a transformative renovation to boost energy efficiency and enhance the member experience. New LED lighting has significantly improved the look and feel of the facility, while significantly reducing operational costs.

From the new activity center to the mezzanine and pickleball courts, YMCA members are taking notice and expressing their appreciation for the makeover. Executive Director Bruce Blanshan shares, “We’ve had so many comments from members saying, ‘Wow, it’s so much brighter in here.'” The improved lighting not only enhances the visual appeal but also makes these spaces safer, more inviting and functional.

The Small Business Direct Install (SBDI) program made participation a breeze. After a brief 20-minute walkthrough with a registered Program Ally Contractor, the project was set in motion. “The next thing you know, everything was done and on order. It was that easy,” Bruce remarks. This seamless process minimized disruptions and allowed the YMCA to quickly enjoy the benefits of the new lighting system.

[LED lighting] is probably one of the biggest things that we were able to take advantage of — that has an impact on us every day from here on out. So we will save funds every day, every week, every month and every year. And that's big for us."

Beyond the immediate visual enhancements, the long-term financial gains are substantial and long-lasting. Incentive dollars from Ameren Illinois covered more than 62% of the total project costs, and the facility is now projected to save roughly $2,200 annually. These savings will enable the YMCA to invest more resources into programs and services for members, enriching the entire community for years to come.
